Have you ever been told you’re “too emotional?”
As a woman it’s very likely you’ve heard it at one time or another. Feeling emotions intensely is often viewed as a handicap in modern society, and as a result it can be a source of embarrassment and shame.
If you are the type who has strong emotions, I’ve got good news for you: There’s nothing wrong with you. The ability to feel emotions intensely, whether positive or negative is not a handicap, it’s a healthy part of being human.
Even when emotions are not being hidden or suppressed, we’re often pressured to be “positive” at all times. This is not only unsustainable, it’s unhealthy.
The rhythm of life is all about ups and downs. If you look at the EKG reading of a healthy human heart, you see that it has peaks and valleys – a regular pattern of ups and downs. Maintaining one emotion at all times (even if it were possible) would be like seeing a flatline on your EKG!
Emotions inform us of what’s really important. Despite the fact that we regularly classify emotions as “positive” or “negative,” there is nothing inherently negative about any emotion.
In fact, one could argue that nothing is truly “good” or “bad.” It just is. It brings lessons for you as well as for the people around you, if you take the time to see them.
When you start looking at life as a growth process and detach from the good/bad or negative/positive view of the world, your perspective shifts. When you start learning to accept life as it is, you’ll start to experience greater fulfilment and contentment.
It’s true that some people seem to feel emotions more intensely than others. If you’re one of those people, you might be inclined to think that there’s something wrong with you, but the opposite is true! You are, in fact, someone blessed with a lot of passion and drive, a person who can move mountains and possibly even change the world.
Remember, it’s the idealists that change the world… not the realists!
So how do I know so much about this? I too struggled with my emotional side for a long time. My journey became a study in trying to recognise, control and master my emotions.
However, the more I detached from the good/bad paradigm, the more I began to understand that emotions are not to be controlled but to be understood, they are not to be mastered but to be listened to.
Your emotions are your guides and they’ll show you who you are deep down inside faster and better than anything or anyon on this planet ever could.
